Optimizing, not overhauling nutrition: a guest post

Super-Nutritionist Amanda Hamilton outlines how we can make the most of superfoods to support our body’s immune system

As we enter 2021, more than ever many of us are looking to make healthy changes to our routines that support our bodies, boost our immunity and grant better all-over wellness. As the UK faces a prolonged lockdown period, with more time spent at home, the closure of gyms and increased anxiety, it’s important that we make new year’s resolutions that aren’t about unrealistic goals to change negative aspects of our lives overnight, but about making steady positive lifestyle changes which we stick to.

Whilst it is vital to maintain a healthy diet year round, now more than ever our bodies are in need of the extra support that superfoods can give us. According to the Medical Research Council, the average human inhales a staggering one hundred million viruses on a daily basis[1]. Our immune system acts as a defense mechanism to these germs, effectively responding to curb their detrimental impact. It has never been more important to keep this inner security guard in optimum condition, and diet can offer the immune system a significant helping hand.

Google Trends data showed that as Covid swept the UK, searches for ‘food’ and ‘immune system’ rose by 670%, showing a gap in consumer knowledge surrounding how we get the best nutrients to support wellness and fight off bacteria. When making new habits, you’re more likely to stick to them by adding them to an existing part of your routine, so adding superfoods to your morning oats or switching your smoothie’s protein powder for a superfood fortified alternative will help to keep you on track.

Whilst “superfoods” isn’t a medical term, it’s a useful way to highlight which ingredients are especially nutrient dense, particularly helpful when so many of us are trying to look after our health in busy and stressful times.

I’m a huge fan of acai, not only for the taste but because it scores low on the GI index, so it is ideal for those people managing blood sugar or simply looking to curb cravings.
